- • Vernon L Nash Antique Auto Club of Fairbanks
In 1970, a group of antique car buffs from Fairbanks all owned cars from 1915 and older. They formed under the Horseless Carriage Club of America, and we were called the Fairbanks Alaska Regional Group of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. This organization only allowed vehicles classified as "horseless carriages" to participate in National club-sponsored tours. They defined a horseless carriage as "early pioneer gas, steam, and electric cars up to and including 1915 model automobiles."
The Fairbanks group wisely decided to allow other vehicles under the following classes:
Production Car includes standard factory-produced automobiles from 1916 to 1942.
Special Interest Car includes any production automobile from 1916 to 1942 with unique design, outstanding features, or unusual styling.
Classic Car includes expensive, high-quality, custom-built, or limited-production automobiles as accepted by the Classic Car Club of America. This class has more flexibility regarding the age of the vehicle.
In 1986, it was decided that the restrictions placed by the Horseless Carriage Club of America on vehicle age no longer met the group's goals. The Fairbanks group chose to switch umbrella organizations, and the club joined the Antique Automobile Club of America. The club kept the three classes of cars and the essential Mission Statement but moved on with gusto toward a newer, more modern club. At about the same time as the switch to the AACA, Vernon L. Nash, founding member and active supporter, passed away. In his honor, the club voted in October 1986 to name the club after him. Doug Cline currently serves as the President of the VLNAACA.
