ANC: Irv Gordon 3 Million Miles
September 14, 2013 @ 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Irv Gordon and his beloved Volvo P1800 will be at Continental Volvo, right here in Anchorage, on Saturday, September 14th. Continental Auto Group is hosting a reception for him with a little Vintage Volvo Car Show in tribute to his trek to Alaska!
My favorite quote, “There’s so much to see and do in this country. Unless you’ve had the opportunity to have a little taste of it, you really don’t know what you’re missing.” – Irv Gordon
Our local Alaska Road Rally scene used to have a Volvo P1800 regularly participating, and they are certainly one of the cars I would have in my stable of vehicles!
From the USA Today article, published August 22, 2013 —
Irv Gordon’s Volvo P1800 should hit 3 million miles next month in Alaska. He has driven every mile himself since he purchased the car in 1966. “I never learned how to share when I was little,” Gordon, 74, says with a laugh.
The retired Long Island teacher didn’t set out to break records — he just likes driving the car. In 1998, at 1.69 million miles, he made the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle.
Gordon says the secret to his car’s longevity is in the glove box. “I read the owner’s manual, and I service the car just the way the book calls for it. I figured the people who wrote the book are the people who built the car, and they should know.”
